What advanced air mobility includes

Advanced air mobility describes new ways of moving people and property with aircraft that may use electric, hybrid-electric or other advanced propulsion. eVTOL aircraft are one prominent category, but the ecosystem also includes conventional takeoff electric aircraft, autonomous systems, vertiports, charging, airspace integration, fleet operations and digital traffic services.

The milestones that matter

• Type certification: the authority approves the aircraft design.
• Production certification: the manufacturer demonstrates repeatable conformity.
• Operational approval: the operator, manuals, training and intended service are authorized.
• Pilot and maintenance pathways: people and organizations are qualified for the aircraft.
• Infrastructure: sites, power, fire protection, passenger processing and community requirements are ready.
• Economics: utilization, maintenance, battery life, insurance and route demand support a durable service.

Progress in 2026

The FAA selected eight proposals for its U.S. Advanced Air Mobility and eVTOL Integration Pilot Program in March 2026, creating a pathway to test selected operations and integration concepts. Separately, aviation authorities continue work to align airworthiness and validation approaches. These developments are meaningful, but participation in a pilot, a prototype flight or an order announcement is not the same as unrestricted commercial certification.

Range, payload and noise claims need operating conditions and sources. Editorial coverage should state when a figure comes from the company and when it has been independently verified.
