If your hotel is on the Croisette, Cannes-Mandelieu looks like the obvious airport. It is close to town, built around private aviation and well placed for the western Riviera. But arrive in a jet that is too large, or plan to leave after the airport closes, and the decision moves to Nice.

For a private jet flight to the Côte d’Azur, start with Cannes for a Cannes stay and Nice for Nice or Monaco. Then check the aircraft, arrival time and parking. Those three details can change which airport gets you to your destination with the least trouble.

There is another distinction worth making early. Flying privately into Nice does not mean joining the queues in an airline terminal. Nice has a dedicated business aviation terminal. The choice is between two different private aviation operations, each with advantages for particular trips.

When Cannes-Mandelieu makes the better arrival

For a meeting at the Palais des Festivals, a hotel on the Croisette or a stay in Mandelieu, Cannes is the first airport to investigate. Cannes Tourism puts Cannes-Mandelieu about 15 minutes from the city center and the Palais. It places Nice Airport 27 kilometers from Cannes.

That geographical advantage matters most when everything else is comparable: the same departure time, a suitable aircraft and a confirmed arrival. You can spend less time on the road and get to the hotel or meeting sooner.

The airport’s handling services include passenger and baggage assistance, a VIP lounge, car arrangements and helicopter connections. This is a private aviation airport with the services you would expect for a charter arrival.

The 35-ton limit needs to be read correctly

Cannes prohibits jets whose certified maximum takeoff weight exceeds 35 metric tons. The limit concerns the aircraft’s certification, not how much it happens to weigh when you land. Reducing fuel or traveling with fewer passengers does not turn a jet above that certified limit into an eligible aircraft.

A jet below the limit still has to meet the requirements for the particular flight. The runway, temperature, wind, runway condition, passenger load and fuel needed for the next leg all affect the operator’s calculation.

Nor should Cannes be described as an airport only for small jets. Its own hangar information describes accommodation for aircraft up to Embraer Legacy size. The useful question is whether the proposed aircraft can operate your trip, with your passengers and baggage, on the required dates.

Departure time can decide the airport

Cannes’ published schedule starts air traffic control operations at 08:00 local time, with closing times between 20:00 and 22:00 across the year. The FBO opens at 06:30, but that earlier reception time is not the start of the normal flight operating window.

If dinner ends late, or an afternoon meeting could run well into the evening, build the return flight around those hours. An itinerary that works only if everyone leaves an event precisely on time gives you little flexibility.

When Nice is the more practical choice

Nice is the stronger starting point for a stay in Nice or Monaco, for many long-range arrivals in larger aircraft, and for trips that need a later departure. Its longer runways and broader operating window give the operator more options.

The Nice AIP lists air traffic services and customs and immigration around the clock. Nighttime noise restrictions still affect aircraft eligibility, so “open 24 hours” does not mean every aircraft can operate at any time.

That distinction is particularly useful for a transatlantic trip. Start with the aircraft that can carry your group, baggage and required fuel on the route. If that aircraft cannot use Cannes, compare Nice plus the onward transfer with any alternative that introduces another stop or a change of aircraft.

Nice has its own private aviation terminal

Nice’s Business Aviation Terminal covers 1,510 square meters and has its own customs control point and departure security checkpoints. The airport lists AviaVIP, Signature Aviation and DC Aviation G-OPS as its business aviation handlers.

Your driver needs the correct business aviation terminal instructions and the name of your handler. Sending the car to a scheduled airline terminal creates an avoidable delay.

The FBO coordinates the ground arrangements around the aircraft and passengers. At either airport, the handler and driver should be working from the same arrival time, passenger count and baggage information.

Choose the airport around your final address

Cannes and the Croisette

Cannes-Mandelieu usually deserves the first quote. Its proximity is valuable for a short stay, a meeting at the Palais or a hotel in Cannes. Nice becomes more attractive when the aircraft, available arrival slot or departure time makes Cannes awkward.

Ask for the transfer to the actual hotel entrance. During major events, vehicle access and the final approach to a property can matter as much as the distance along the highway.

Antibes and Cap d’Antibes

This is the middle ground. Antibes Tourism places the city between Cannes and Nice and estimates 20–40 minutes from Nice Airport when the road is clear. A villa on the Cap, a berth at Port Vauban and a hotel in Juan-les-Pins are different destinations.

Have your chauffeur compare both airports for the planned landing time. A small road advantage is easy to lose if it requires a less convenient flight time or a different aircraft.

Nice and Monaco

Nice is the natural choice for Nice itself and the first airport to consider for Monaco. For Monaco, compare a car transfer with a helicopter connection, using the complete journey in each case.

Monacair advertises approximately seven minutes in the air between Nice and Monaco, with regular departures every 30 minutes. Its published Nice departures begin at 08:15, and the last service is before nightfall.

Seven minutes is the helicopter flight. You still need to leave the jet, collect and transfer baggage, complete the connection and travel from the Monaco heliport to your address. A late jet arrival may work at Nice while falling outside the regular helicopter schedule.

Give the helicopter provider your baggage dimensions as well as the passenger count. The luggage that fits comfortably in your jet may require a different plan for the helicopter.

Saint-Tropez and yacht departures

For Saint-Tropez, compare the entire transfer before settling on either airport. The town’s transport information describes helicopter connections from Nice and Toulon to Grimaud heliport, followed by a car to Saint-Tropez. The advertised destination does not necessarily identify the final landing site.

Cannes has another option for travelers continuing by sea. Its Sea Valet service advertises a private shuttle to Port du Béal in five minutes, with booking requested 72 hours ahead. From there, passengers can continue by boat or sea taxi.

That five-minute leg gets you to the nearby port. The boat journey, boarding and any transfer to a yacht at anchor still belong in the itinerary. Give the flight team the actual embarkation point, not simply “a yacht near Cannes.”

A shorter drive can still mean a later hotel arrival

Take an example of a flight from London to the Riviera for a stay in Cannes. Assume your operator can offer an 11:00 arrival at Nice, while the available Cannes arrival is 11:30. For this comparison, allow 20 minutes at either airport before the car leaves, then a 45-minute drive from Nice or a 20-minute drive from Cannes.

Cannes saves 25 minutes after landing. Nice still gets you to the hotel five minutes earlier because its available arrival is 30 minutes earlier.

Give both airports the same 11:00 arrival, however, and Cannes gets you there at 11:40 rather than 12:05. The advantage comes back to Cannes. Comparing complete itineraries shows what the airport’s location is actually worth for your trip.

Slots and parking: two confirmations you need

Nice is a coordinated airport. Your handler requests the relevant slots through COHOR, whose published arrangements also require airport approval for business aviation turnarounds exceeding four hours.

An arrival slot and permission to leave the aircraft parked are different things. If you are staying for a long weekend, ask whether the quoted aircraft can remain at the airport until your return flight.

At Cannes, coordination applies during periods announced through aviation notices. The airport’s limited capacity can also produce delays. A quieter-looking airport is not a promise of an unrestricted arrival.

The Cannes Film Festival, Monaco Grand Prix and yacht events are reasons to settle the flight and ground arrangements early. Request arrival and departure options, overnight parking and a fallback airport together. The right fallback includes a revised car or helicopter booking, not just another airport name.

Which airport is cheaper for a private jet?

There is no useful universal answer without the route, aircraft, dates and parking plan. A lower landing charge can disappear inside a larger bill for repositioning, additional handling or the onward transfer.

Ask for comparable quotes covering the occupied flight, any positioning flights, handling, airport charges, parking, crew expenses, applicable taxes and the transfer to your final address. Confirm what happens to the price if the aircraft has to drop you off and park elsewhere.

That extra movement is part of why a one-way charter can cost more than half a round trip. The operator is pricing the aircraft’s work around your journey, including flying it without you when necessary.

For example, suppose an otherwise comparable Cannes quote is €500 lower, but its parking arrangement requires €1,800 of additional repositioning and handling. If those amounts are outside the original quote, the apparent saving becomes a €1,300 premium. These are example quote figures; the calculation is €1,800 minus €500.

Separating those items makes the comparison useful. Our guide to FBO fees explains how handling, parking, hangarage and other charges can appear on the bill.

What to put in your booking request

Send the broker or operator your departure airport, preferred arrival time, full destination address, passenger count and baggage details. Include the earliest acceptable departure and the latest time you might realistically leave your event.

Then ask for Cannes and Nice options using those same requirements. You want to know the proposed aircraft, the status of the airport arrangements, whether it can stay, the complete transfer time and the price if the plan changes.

If your trip begins in Switzerland, our Zurich-to-Nice private jet guide adds route-specific planning. For the airport decision itself, start with your final address and work backward through the transfer, available flight time and aircraft.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cannes or Nice better for a private jet to the French Riviera?

Cannes is often the first choice for Cannes and Mandelieu when the aircraft and schedule fit. Nice is generally more practical for Nice, Monaco, larger aircraft and late travel. Compare the hotel arrival time and complete quote for your dates.

Can every private jet land at Cannes-Mandelieu?

No. Cannes excludes jets above 35 metric tons certified maximum takeoff weight. Aircraft below that limit still need to meet runway, performance, noise and operator requirements for the flight.

Is Cannes-Mandelieu open 24 hours?

No. Its published air traffic control opening is 08:00 local, with seasonal closing times between 20:00 and 22:00. Nice operates around the clock, with slots and aircraft-specific noise restrictions.

Will I use the airline terminal if I arrive by private jet at Nice?

Normally, your private flight is handled through the dedicated Business Aviation Terminal and your FBO. Confirm the meeting point with your handler and driver.

How long does the Nice-to-Monaco helicopter transfer take?

Monacair advertises about seven minutes airborne. Allow additional time for the connection from your jet, baggage, boarding and the drive from the heliport. Its regular service finishes before nightfall.
