History of Aspen
Aspen began as a silver-mining town in the late nineteenth century on land connected with the Ute people. Mining decline preceded its revival as a ski resort and cultural centre. Surviving historic buildings distinguish it from purpose-built mountain resorts.
Silver discoveries in 1879 drew prospectors into Ute homelands and created a booming mining town. The collapse of silver prices in 1893 ended that early prosperity, leaving buildings that now define the historic centre.
Skiing brought a different economy after the Second World War. Cultural initiatives, including music and intellectual gatherings, helped establish Aspen as more than a seasonal mountain resort.
