History of Scottsdale
Scottsdale developed in an area with long-standing Indigenous communities, including the Akimel O'odham. Farming and irrigation preceded its growth as a desert resort and residential centre. Art, design and outdoor recreation later became prominent visitor interests.
The Salt River Valley contains a much older history of Indigenous settlement and irrigation than Scottsdale's modern resort image suggests. The town developed around farming in the late nineteenth century.
Artists, ranch tourism and post-war growth later changed its scale. Frank Lloyd Wright's establishment of Taliesin West added architectural significance, while contemporary resorts and residential districts spread across a much wider desert landscape.
