History of Minneapolis
Minneapolis developed beside the Mississippi on Dakota homelands. Water power at St. Anthony Falls supported major flour and timber industries. The city's later cultural institutions and business districts grew around a landscape still defined by the river and lakes.
Dakota people held deep connections with the Mississippi landscape before American settlement and dispossession. St Anthony Falls supplied power for sawmills and flour mills, making the city an important industrial centre.
Railways and agricultural trade connected Minneapolis with a vast hinterland. Milling later declined, and former industrial spaces gained new uses, while migration, cultural institutions and neighbourhood activism continued to reshape the city.
