History of Columbus
Columbus was planned as Ohio's state capital in the early nineteenth century, within a region with much older Indigenous settlement and earthworks. Government and later education and industry shaped its development. Distinct neighbourhoods preserve different phases of that urban growth.
Ohio established Columbus in 1812 as a centrally located state capital, rather than allowing an older river port to retain that role. Government, transport and manufacturing supported subsequent growth.
The founding of Ohio State University in the nineteenth century added a major educational institution. Later suburban expansion and a diverse service economy produced a metropolitan area extending well beyond the original planned centre.
