History of Cincinnati
Cincinnati developed beside the Ohio River in the late eighteenth century, initially under the name Losantiville. River commerce and manufacturing supported its growth. Immigration, particularly from German-speaking Europe, left a lasting influence on its neighbourhoods and cultural life.
Settlement on the Ohio River began in the late eighteenth century, and steamboat commerce soon made Cincinnati an important inland port. Manufacturing and meat processing supported rapid expansion, alongside substantial German immigration.
The city's position across from slaveholding Kentucky gave it a significant role in debates and escape networks surrounding slavery. Later industrial change and conservation shaped the neighbourhoods and riverfront seen today.
