History of Rome
Rome grew from ancient settlements beside the Tiber into the centre of the Roman Republic and Empire. Papal rule and later its role as Italy's capital added further layers. Archaeological sites, churches and everyday neighbourhoods overlap across the modern city.
Roman tradition dates the city's foundation to 753 BC, but archaeological settlement history is more complex. Republic and empire created roads, forums and monuments that influenced territories far beyond Italy.
Christian institutions and the papacy later reshaped the city, followed by Renaissance and Baroque patronage. Rome became the capital of unified Italy in 1871, adding national institutions to a landscape already layered by many centuries.
