History of Key West
Key West's Indigenous history preceded its growth as a nineteenth-century maritime town. Wrecking, fishing and cigar production supported different parts of its economy. Later writers, artists and tourism helped establish the island's distinctive cultural reputation.
Indigenous use and Spanish maritime activity preceded American development of Key West in the nineteenth century. Salvaging shipwrecks, fishing and cigar manufacturing helped sustain a busy island port.
The railway connection completed in 1912 and later road access transformed travel. Cuban migration, naval facilities and literary associations added different layers to a town whose historic streets extend beyond its modern holiday reputation.
