Where to land for Hyannis
Cape Cod Gateway Airport serves Hyannis. Confirm the ground destination across the Cape before arrival, or arrange a separate onward island connection if the trip continues to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.
Airport options and trade-offs| Airport | Location and access | Private aviation planning |
|---|
| Cape Cod Gateway AirportHYA / KHYA | Hyannis, in the town of Barnstable. | The local airport, formerly Barnstable Municipal, has Atlantic Aviation handling. It is the first gateway to compare for a Hyannis-based trip, with the actual aircraft, weather and operating requirements assessed by the flight operator. |
|---|
| Boston Logan InternationalBOS / KBOS | Boston, across the mainland side of the Cape journey. | A relevant alternative when combining Boston meetings with Cape Cod, or when the operator selects a different arrival plan. The extended road connection makes it a separate itinerary choice; avoid a tight same-day ferry commitment. |

Private terminals and arrival experience
A fixed-base operator (FBO) provides ground services for private aircraft and their passengers. The handling team coordinates your arrival; airport opening hours alone do not establish terminal or border-service availability.
730 Barnstable Road
Atlantic Aviation HYA
Atlantic lists a pilot’s lounge, heated hangar space, rental cars, baggage service and catering. Its published staffed hours are 06:00–18:00, with on-call service by prior arrangement. Confirm the actual arrival and departure windows directly.
Before an international arrival
Customs and passenger coordination
Atlantic lists customs among its HYA services. Ask the operator and handler to establish the flight’s processing arrangements and vehicle pickup before departure; a listed facility is not a confirmed clearance appointment.
Airport transfers and getting around
Hyannis, Chatham and Harwich
Harbour base or a wider Cape resort
Use a car with the exact FBO pickup point and final property address. Hyannis Harbor Hotel is by the local harbour; Chatham Bars Inn is on Shore Road in Chatham, while Wequassett is on Pleasant Bay in Harwich. Request a date-specific driver estimate for the chosen journey, particularly before a fixed dinner.
Hyannis to Oak Bluffs
A ferry connection to Martha’s Vineyard
Hy-Line publishes a one-hour crossing for its seasonal high-speed passenger ferry, with arrival at least 45 minutes before departure. Add the separate airport-to-dock journey, baggage collection and any parking time. Book both outbound and return space.
Local walks and peninsula outings
Choosing a car for the stay
A harbour hotel works for shorter walking outings, but the Chatham and Pleasant Bay programme is best planned with a car or booked driver. Keep an island excursion on its own day rather than combining it with a long resort transfer.
Ask the operating carrier to confirm aircraft suitability, handling and permissions for the actual itinerary. For budgeting, see our private jet charter cost guide.
History of Hyannis
Hyannis takes its name from Iyannough, a leader of the Cummaquid band of the Wampanoag. The village developed around maritime activity and later became a transport and visitor centre on Cape Cod. Its Kennedy associations added another modern historical chapter.
Hyannis developed within a Cape landscape with longstanding Wampanoag connections. Maritime commerce, fishing and shipbuilding shaped the village before railway access encouraged nineteenth-century travel and seasonal residence.
Twentieth-century tourism and ferry services strengthened its position as a transport and commercial centre. Its association with the Kennedy family added national visibility, though that represents only one chapter of the village's history.
Interesting facts
- Hyannis is a village within the town of Barnstable.
- Hyannis Port is a neighbouring harbour community, not simply another name for all of Hyannis.
