Where to land for Hilton Head
Hilton Head Airport is on the island. Savannah/Hilton Head International is on the mainland in Georgia and entails a different road transfer; compare both the flight's needs and the location of your accommodation.
Airport options and trade-offs| Airport | Location and access | Private aviation planning |

| Hilton Head Island AirportHHH / KHXD; FAA identifier HXD | On Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. | The island gateway has Signature handling. HHH is the airline code; aviation material often uses HXD. The operator should assess the flight and aircraft against current airport information before confirming arrival. |

Private terminals and arrival experience
A fixed-base operator (FBO) provides ground services for private aircraft and their passengers. The handling team coordinates your arrival; airport opening hours alone do not establish terminal or border-service availability.
52 Gateway Circle
Signature Hilton Head
Signature publishes 06:00–22:00 local service and call-out by arrangement, with aircraft parking, a flight-planning room and ground-transport support. Reserve any hangar space and agree the passenger vehicle meeting point.
Savannah/Hilton Head International
Mainland handling
The airport lists Signature and Sheltair as FBOs, together with customs contact information. Ask the chosen handler to coordinate the vehicle, baggage and any international formalities; airport facilities alone do not establish a confirmed clearance appointment.

Airport to resort
A Sea Pines planning benchmark
Sea Pines estimates approximately 15 minutes from the island airport and 45–50 minutes from Savannah/Hilton Head International by car. Treat these as the resort’s broad estimates, excluding flight formalities, the exact FBO route and tournament congestion.
Omni guests
Palmetto Dunes and Shelter Cove
Omni publishes a local shuttle within Palmetto Dunes and the Shelter Cove area, subject to availability. This is useful for nearby outings, but a separate car arrangement is needed for the airport or a wider island programme.
Ask the operating carrier to confirm aircraft suitability, handling and permissions for the actual itinerary. For budgeting, see our private jet charter cost guide.
History of Hilton Head
Hilton Head preserves evidence of Indigenous settlement in ancient shell rings. Plantation agriculture, slavery and the history of Gullah communities shaped later centuries. Resort development during the twentieth century introduced a different pattern of coastal land use.
Indigenous communities occupied the island long before European plantations introduced rice, indigo and cotton cultivation. Enslaved labour sustained that economy, and the Civil War brought Union occupation and profound social change.
Mitchelville, established during the war, became an important community of formerly enslaved people. Twentieth-century bridge access and planned resorts later transformed an island whose Gullah Geechee heritage remains central to its identity.
Interesting facts
- Mitchelville's history is distinct from the later resort developments.
